What does the course cover?

On this programme you will study:

  • Introduction to Teaching and Learning
  • Behaviour and Well-being for Teaching and Learning
  • Developing Professionalism for Teaching and Learning (Part 1)
  • Curriculum and Assessment for Teaching and Learning
  • Developing Professionalism for Teaching and Learning (Part 2)

The majority of teaching consists of lectures, small group work and one-to-one tutorials. Assessment is through assignments, projects and team presentations. You will also be observed delivering your classes and you will need to provide evidence of a minimum of 100 hours of teaching during the course, a third of which can be one-to-one delivery. Our tutors have worked in further education for many years and will provide support to help you to succeed.

When will I attend?

Part-time route - attendance is required one evening per week 5.30pm - 8.30pm

Full-time route - attendance is required every Thursday 10am - 2.30pm and Friday 10am - 12.30pm

Our lessons are delivered using a blended learning approach meaning that some lessons will be delivered face-to-face whilst some others will be delivered virtually using Zoom. Your Tutor will provide you with a timetable during induction.

What will I achieve?

On successful completion, you will achieve a Level 5 Certificate in Education 14+ (Cert Ed), awarded by the University of Bolton.

This course will give you the necessary skills and practical experience required to prepare you for a teaching career, with the emphasis being in the Further Education and Skills sector. In this sector, you’ll have the opportunity to work with Further Education learners who range in age from 14 years old to adult. These students come from different backgrounds and experiences and may enter further education from local schools, the community, industry or local businesses. 

What are the entry requirements?
  • You must have the highest vocational qualification relevant to that subject area you wish to teach. For some subject areas, this means a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) level 3, and for others, it may be an NVQ level 4 or a Higher National Diploma (HND).
  • You'll be required to attend an interview as part of the application process. This will involve written diagnostic tests for English/literacy and mathematics/numeracy.
  • This course involves working unsupervised with children and/or vulnerable young people and adults and you must gain an Enhanced Disclosure certificate from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) before starting your studies. Charges are payable to cover the cost of the DBS Enhanced Disclosure application and annual registration with the online Update Service.
How much does the course cost?

The fee for the part-time route is £3,300 per year.

The fee for the full-time route is £8,250.

Students are generally entitled to a tuition fee loan from Student Finance England.

Is there a bursary available?

Yes, however bursaries are only available for the subjects listed below, for courses starting in the 2023 to 2024 academic year.

Bursary of £29,000 available for the following subjects:

  • Mathematics 
  • Science, including Biology, Chemistry or Physics 
  • Engineering or Manufacturing
  • Computing

Bursary of £15,000 available for the following subjects:

  • English
  • Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
