On 10 May, a group of learners from The Skills Company’s Salford Training Centre teamed up with id verde to complete conservation work as part of The Peel Park Renovation Project in Salford.
The Peel Park Site is a historic park dating back to 1846, when it was opened as one of three public parks in the city. The park is currently undergoing a £1.6m renovation programme which includes building a modern play area, new drainage, reconditioning and additional steps, ramps, landing platforms and footways which all lead to the central events area, whilst being embraced with new trees, shrub planting and wild flower meadows.
The learners were responsible for working on the Plantation Project to prepare and plant seasonal meadow in the park. Tasks included digging over beds with shovels, raking and preparing seed beds using landscape and spring-tyne rakes and hand broadcasting seed. On reflection of their experience on the project one learner stated:
“I gained knowledge of health and safety in the work place and learnt valuable experience of working in a team. I also developed my personal skills working on my own, improving my communication skills in a team, and following instructions and procedures. I also loved helping the community in improving the local park.”
The project manager of id verde commented on how well the learners worked together and what a difference they’d made in such a short space of time. He was extremely pleased with their efforts in hot conditions. Id verde are hoping to continue their work with The Skills Company over the next few months, not only in Salford but also funding them to assist with other projects in London. They have also kindly offered work placements and apprenticeship opportunities.
